Types of cooling elements
Fill in the cooling tower is necessary so that the water flowing through it is crushed into small drops, distributed over the entire surface of the walls and cools quickly upon contact with air. Depending on the design, fill can be:
- film type fill. They hold water well enough on their surface, distributing it in a very thin layer;
- drip type fill. They consist of many tubes, gutters and rails, along which water flows and drips;
- film-drop type. They are called hybrid or combined and withstand a load 2 times higher in comparison with drip systems.
Most often, hybrid film-drip fills are installed in the cooling tower. The water passing through them is unevenly distributed, constantly mixed and cools very quickly. The choice of type depends on the ease of repair, the purity of the water to be cooled, the height of the cooling tower, the average ambient temperature, and many other factors. The material of manufacture also affects the choice. The most practical and durable are structures made of polypropylene and polymers. With these materials, the cooling tower will not need to replace the irrigation system for a long time.

The design of the fill should provide sufficient cooling surface area with optimal aerodynamic resistance. Depending on the nature of the predominant cooling surface, fill can be: film, drip and film-drop (hybrid) type.
Each type of fill device can have a variety of designs (straight troughs, offsets, etc.) and sizes, and can be made from different materials, depending on the temperature of the inlet water to the cooling tower. When choosing a fill, it is necessary to take into account a number of other indicators such as durability, strength and weight, ease of assembly and installation, accessibility during repairs and inspections, as well as the presence of suspended solids and aggressive impurities in the cooled water.
